What Is a Morning Desert Safari in Dubai?

A morning desert safari in Dubai is a guided desert adventure that takes guests from their hotel in a 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser to the Lahbab Desert  approximately 55 km southeast of Dubai city centre along the E66 highway. Guests spend around 2 hours doing dune bashing, sandboarding, and camel riding, then return to their hotel before noon.

The experience is purely adventure and natural scenery. There is no BBQ dinner, no belly dancing, no evening camp entertainment. This is the desert at its best  cool, quiet, and untouched.

The Lahbab Desert’s dunes are red because of iron oxide in the sand. These dunes reach 80 to 100 metres (262 to 328 feet) in height, significantly taller than the 20 to 30-metre dunes at Al Aweer, making Lahbab the preferred location for dune bashing in Dubai.

Before entering the dunes, the driver deflates the Land Cruiser’s tyre pressure to 15 to 18 PSI (103 to 124 kPa). This wider contact surface gives grip on soft sand and cushions the ride across steep descents.

Key Activities on a Morning Desert Safari in Dubai

Dune Bashing in the Lahbab Red Dunes

Dune bashing is the centrepiece of every morning safari. The Roar Adventure Tourism DTCM-licensed driver takes a 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser up, over, and down the 80 to 100-metre red dunes at speed  ascending steep faces, cresting the top, and descending at angles that feel like a real off-road roller coaster.

The session lasts 30 to 45 minutes. The morning light makes it visually spectacular  the contrast between shadowed and sunlit dune faces is sharpest before 10:00 AM, and the dunes are completely untouched.

Seatbelts are mandatory throughout. Roar Adventure Tourism guides check before the first dune  no exceptions.

Tip: Take motion sickness medication 30 minutes before pickup if prone to travel sickness. Most guests who feel uncertain in the first two minutes are asking for more by minute five.

Sandboarding on Dubai’s Red Sand Dunes

After dune bashing, the guide sets up sandboards  also called sand surfing or sand skiing  at the base of a suitable dune. Guests stand or lie face-down on a board and slide down the steep slip face. No experience is needed. The guide demonstrates and guests practise on a smaller slope first.

Morning has a specific advantage: cooler sand is firmer and faster than warm afternoon sand, making descents more controlled. Children aged 6 and above can sandboard with adult supervision.

Camel Riding  A Traditional Arabian Desert Experience

The camel ride lasts 10 to 15 minutes and gives a completely different perspective on the desert  elevated above the ground, guests see the dunes as wider, more open, more vast.

Camels served as the primary mode of transport across the Arabian Desert for thousands of years. Bedouin communities crossed hundreds of kilometres on them. Even a brief ride connects guests to that history in a way that feels real.

The camels are calm, trained animals managed by experienced handlers. Children aged 3 and above can ride with adult supervision. The trickiest moment is the mount  the camel kneels, rises front legs first, and gives a sharp forward tilt. Hold on.

Desert Photography  The Golden Morning Light

The morning safari happens during the best photographic light of the entire day. In the first 60 minutes after sunrise, the sun sits low and casts long shadows across the undulating dunes. Photographers call this the golden hour, and in the Lahbab Desert, it is outstanding.

5 shots to capture:

  • Silhouettes of people or camels against the bright morning sky
  • Ripple patterns across the sand surface, shot at ground level
  • Panoramic dune landscapes from the highest accessible crest
  • Action vehicle shots during the steep dune descents
  • Camel portraits in low morning light

Tip: Pack your phone in a sealable plastic bag during dune bashing. Fine desert sand reaches every open port within minutes.

Falconry  Traditional Emirati Heritage and Culture

Falconry has been practised in the UAE for over 4,000 years. In 2016, UNESCO recognised Arabian falconry as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The falcon appears on the UAE’s national emblem.

At the morning photo stop, guests have the opportunity to hold a trained falcon on a gloved hand and be photographed with it against the desert backdrop (at an extra cost). It is brief but one of the most distinctively Emirati experiences on any Dubai tour.

Morning Desert Safari Dubai for Families, Couples and Solo Travelers

Is Morning Desert Safari Good for Families with Kids?

Yes. The 4-hour duration, cooler morning temperatures, and noon return make morning safari far more manageable for children than a 6 to 7-hour evening safari.

Morning Desert Safari for Couples and Honeymooners

The private morning safari is the most popular choice for couples. A dedicated Land Cruiser, a personal guide, and flexible itinerary create conditions for genuine, uninterrupted time in one of the world’s most photogenic landscapes. The early morning quiet of the Lahbab Desert is something an evening safari cannot replicate.

Morning Desert Safari for Solo Travelers

The shared morning safari at AED 149 is the best-value option for solo guests. Tours typically run with 4 to 6 guests per vehicle. Solo travelers consistently rate the shared morning safari as one of the best ways to meet fellow travelers in Dubai without joining a large group tour.

Why Morning Safaris Work Better for Families Than Evening Safaris

  • Cooler temperatures  15 to 25°C versus 38 to 42°C at evening safari pickup. Children overheat faster than adults
  • Shorter duration  4 hours versus 6 to 7 hours. Young children cannot sustain a full evening tour
  • No late night  back by noon, with no disruption to bedtime routines
  • Adjustable dune bashing intensity  available on private Roar Adventure Tourism bookings for families with young children
  • Lower UV exposure  significantly less direct sun at 8:00 AM versus 3:00 PM

Tip: For children under 3 or pregnant guests, ask about the light desert drive option  it explores the Lahbab Desert without steep dune descents. Available on private bookings only.

Morning vs Evening Desert Safari Dubai Which Should You Choose?

Morning safaris focus on adventure and natural scenery in cooler temperatures. Evening safaris add a BBQ dinner, belly dancing, Tanoura dance, and fire shows after dune activities.

Best Time of Year for a Morning Desert Safari in Dubai

The best time for a morning desert safari in Dubai is November to March, when temperatures sit between 15 and 25°C (59 and 77°F).

November to March  Peak Season (Recommended) Morning temperatures range from 15 to 18°C in December and January. Clear skies, low humidity, and outstanding golden hour light. Book at least 24 to 48 hours in advance  some December to January dates require 4 to 5 days ahead.

April to May and September to October  Good Option Shoulder season mornings start around 25°C and warm steadily. Guests are back in the vehicle before the heat becomes uncomfortable. Lower demand means shorter booking lead times and occasionally lower pricing.

June to August  Early Morning Only Pickup moves to 6:30 AM. Desert temperatures at that hour run 32 to 35°C  manageable before the full heat arrives. The significant advantage: often the entire Lahbab Desert to a group alone, with no other vehicle tracks in the sand.

What to Wear and What to Pack for a Morning Desert Safari in Dubai

Wear loose, breathable cotton or linen clothing with closed-toe shoes. Bring sunscreen at SPF 50 or above, sunglasses, and a light jacket for winter pickups when the Lahbab Desert drops to 15°C at 7:00 AM.

Clothing to Wear

  • Loose, lightweight cotton or linen top  covers shoulders
  • Loose-fitting trousers or long shorts  fine sand works into tight clothing
  • Closed-toe trainers or sneakers  sand gets inside open sandals immediately
  • Wide-brim hat or baseball cap  sun protection from 8:00 AM
  • Light jacket or hoodie for November to January mornings
  • Scarf  optional, useful for keeping sand out during bashing

What to Pack in Your Bag

  • Sunscreen SPF 50+  apply before pickup
  • Polarised sunglasses  work particularly well on red sand
  • Fully charged phone or camera, plus power bank
  • Sealable plastic bag or dust-proof case for devices
  • Motion sickness medication  take 30 minutes before pickup if prone
  • Cash in AED  for on-site add-ons
  • Personal medication  inform the guide of any medical conditions

Safety and Health Restrictions  Morning Desert Safari Dubai

Morning desert safaris in Dubai are safe when operated by DTCM-licensed operators with trained drivers and inspected vehicles. Roar Adventure Tourism inspects every Land Cruiser before each departure.

Who Should Not Participate in Dune Bashing?

  • Children under 3 years old
  • Pregnant women at any stage
  • Guests with back or neck injuries
  • Guests with heart conditions or high blood pressure
  • Guests who have had surgery within the last 6 months
  • Elderly guests with significant mobility limitations

Guests in these categories are welcome on the safari. Roar Adventure Tourism arranges a light desert drive alternative so every member of the group participates safely.

Safety Standards You Should Expect From a DTCM-Licensed Operator

  • DTCM licence  always verify the operator’s licence before paying
  • Daily vehicle inspection  every Land Cruiser checked before departure
  • Mandatory seatbelts  worn throughout dune bashing
  • Pre-safari safety briefing  all procedures explained before entering the dunes
  • Tyre pressure deflation  reduced to 15–18 PSI for grip and comfort
  • First aid kit  carried in every vehicle on every tour
  • GPS tracking  all vehicles monitored in real time

Fact: Dubai’s DTCM (Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing) requires all desert safari operators to hold a current operating licence. Roar Adventure Tourism is fully licensed. Unlicensed operators offering significantly lower prices provide no verified safety standard and no regulatory protection.

What to Do in Dubai After Your Morning Safari
